Tom received his PhD in English Literature from the University of Cambridge in 2015. His thesis, Locke, Wilkins, Johnson: Variations on a Theme of Wittgenstein, is an epistemological study which uses close readings of three texts to illuminate some difficulties from Wittgenstein's Philosophical Investigations, and vice versa. Part of this work was recently published as 'On Definition and Explanation in the Preface to Johnson's Dictionary of the English Language', MLR, 111 (2016), 311–32. He is currently writing a book about Robert Southey and Thomas Telford.
